What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government scheme that aims to help reduce carbon emissions by encouraging householders in England and Wales to switch to low-carbon heating systems such as air source heat pumps in place of existing gas or oil heating. The scheme offers up to £5,000 to assist with the upfront costs of upgrading to air source heat pumps. The scheme will run from 2022 to 2028 and is not means-tested.
You could be eligible if:
- Your property is in England or Wales
- You own the property - whether this is your home, a holiday let or small commercial property
- You are replacing the old fossil fuel or electric heating system with a renewable heating system such as an air source heat pump
- You are not replacing a heat pump or previous renewable system
- The property has a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation
If you live in Scotland, you can apply for an interest-free loan to pay for energy efficiency improvements upfront, including air source heat pumps. There are also grants for low-income households in Scotland and in Wales.

What is the application process?

Installer applies to Ofgem for a voucher, providing all the necessary information

Ofgem contacts property owner and they confirm their consent

Ofgem assess the application and once satisfied, and property owner consent has been confirmed, issue a voucher to the installer
